LEVELS OF CONTROL

This mind/body/spirit is under the control of a variety of systems- some conscious, most below the level of consciousness. Following is a brief overview of the levels that we should be aware of if we seek personal power in our lives.
GENETIC:
  • CHEMICAL- The most basic level of behavior is chemical. In primitive organisms what often looks like behavior is often some form of chemotaxis or other chemically mediated behavior. An example of this is the way plants "move" toward light or the way amoebas move toward food. It is important to look at this because much of our own emotional experience is the result of the release of chemicals into our brains and bodies. Once our brain chemistry is effected in this way our only control is to adapt to the change or to use conscious processes to release other chemicals into our own neurological "soup".

  • REFLEXIVE - Many of our neural pathways are "hard-wired". Reflexes control not only our bodies, as in the kneee jerk reflex, but our minds and our behavior. Primitive emotions such as fear are very often released by reflexive action. In these instances personal control comes in the form of selective interpretation of events in our experience and environment.
  • INSTINCTUAL- Much of what we experience in our lives is the result of fixed emotional responses or behavior patterns that are coded like "macros" into our DNA. As with reflexes, personal control in the realm of instinct comes in the form of selective interpretation of events in ways that either release instinctive reactions or keep them from being released.
